Threads of Time: Masks, 2021 (Gemena, RDC)

Influenced by ceremonial African masks, these forms represent the knowledge and wisdom of our ancestors that we risk losing. This work expresses the idea that the solutions to the problems we face, as a global community, the environmental problems, social ills, poverty, the issues facing us, as humankind, can be solved by looking back and examining the knowledge of those who came before us.
The mask forms in this series are carton insets from home internet dish packaging. The satellite, and thus the internet, has become a means of modern communication, connecting humans across the globe. The traditional African mask is used as a form of communication with our ancestors, the environmental elements around us, and the universal energy that connects all living beings. Both satellites and traditional masks use invisible waves to communicate across space and time.
In a real sense all life is inter-related. All men are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be, and you can never be what you ought to be until I am what I ought to be.
– Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr.
