Terae Soumah

The series Gemena Perspectives explores much more than life in the capital village of Sud Ubangi, an oft forgotten province in the northwestern corner of Congo bordering the Central African Republic. Gemena Perspectives is a reflection on change, the abandonment of comfort, and transition to the unknown.

Moving to such a remote place ruptured everything in my life: my identity as an artist, educator, scholar, and mother. I resisted, struggled, and finally broke. Coming out of a dark and desperate place forced me to embrace the natural wonder around me. I challenged myself to capture one image of beauty every day. A new perspective, from Gemena.
